Papercopter

Today we made papercopters for a reading task.  At first I found it hard to get it to fly but I did it.  We got to put stickers on it once we made it fly. My favourite part was having races with my friends to see who's papercopter was fastest. We made telly chart to see who won the most. Olivia's papercopter was the fastest to get to the ground.  Have you ever made this? If you have did it fly?

White Baiting

This is my writing that I did about going white baiting. I am proud of it because I think I used lots of describing words.  I had lots of fun in the holidays. Have you ever been white baiting?

White baiting

Me, dad and Finnian went white baiting near Ross with Mark, Mia, William, Tony, Akalya and Sarah. We go white baiting every year. We were gone for three days. No Mums were allowed. I was excited to get to the beach. It was a warm day. When we arrived we went to the barn. There were cows, roosters and chickens everywhere.  We were sleeping in the barn! We uasilly sleep in a tent but this year we wanted to do something different. One of the doors didn’t shut. There was poo and blood on the floor. The barn smelled like poo and sheep.  We dropped off our stuff and went to the beach.

I was glad to get away from the smell. To get to the beach we had to drive through some sheep paddocks. We parked the car and waited for the others to arrive. Soon Mark and William had arrived. Mia and her Mum were going for a ride before Mia’s Mum had to leave. We all jumped down onto the sand. We made a fire pit but didn’t light it. We did it while the dads tried to get some whitebait. The dads didn’t have any luck. So we were going to try across the other side of the river.

We got the kayaks and nets to cross the river. We had Finnians and my kayak. Me and Dad went across first. I paddled across to the other side. I grabbed my gumboots, Dads backpack and his gumboots. Dad attached my kayak to the one that he was on and paddled back over. To get someone else. I was left there on my own. Dad took so long I thought they had forgotten about me. The reason they took a while was because Tony, Sarah and Akalya had arrived. Finally Finnian and Dad came.  There were more kayaks now because Tony and his kids had some. Next came Willam and his friend Leth. Lastly the parents came over.

We made a fire pit and then Tony used the lighter to get it started. The dads took turns whitebaiting. The first and second whitebait was caught by Mark. We named them Pitrisha and Bob but Leth burnt patrisha. The highest score of whitebait in one scoop was 32. That was from my dad. Me and aklyka washed the whitebait before putting them in the bucket so the bucket didn’t have lots and lots of weed and stone. We also liked counting how many whitebait were in the net. After a while we got bored of doing that so we went off to find somthing else to do.

Me and Akalyka played mud monsters in the water. Finnian kept throwing mud balls at us. The water only came up to our ankles. Soon Mia finished her ride and came over. She went to play with Sarah and William. They were making a hut. We went over to them. We found a place that we liked because the sand crumbled beneath our feet until it was just normal sand. Soon it was time to go back across the river.

We paddled across and went back to the barn. The dads got ready to go back to the beach while we played. Next we were back at the beach. Dad got a fire started and cooked some potatoes and sausages. When we had eaten we found marshmallow sticks. We roasted the marshmallows but it took a while because the marshmallows were ginormous. It got dark quickly.

We ran away from the parents. We were almost in total darkness. I stubbed my toe a few times because I could not see where I was going. As we ran down the beach we found good hiding spots. Me and akalyka got bored of hiding so we spied on the parents. My dad jumped out at us. I jumped really high because it got a fright. The dads called for us to come to the cars. We brushed our teeth and jumped into bed. It took me a while to get to sleep because I was so excited. It rained a bit in the night but I was warm because I had my sleeping bag and a blanket. I was happy but tired afterward.

Planting Seeds

Today Sarah came to our class room. We got into groups. I was with Sofia, Olivia, Ben, Louis and Jasper.  We got to plant some Kōwhai , and Manuka seeds. First we got told how deep to put the Kowhai seeds.  We had to put them in as deep as the seed was in height. We used popcical sticks to tell what was in the soil. Then we had to carry the pots down to the propagation tunnel. Next we did the Manuka seeds. They were tiny. We had to sprinkle the seeds over some small holes. We watered the seed with a spray bottle.  Then we carried them to the propagation tunnel again.  Have you ever planted some seeds?

Daffodil art

This is my daffodil art. We had to colour 3 pictures in with pastels and then cut it out. The hardest part for me was doing the cutting. I liked colouring in. Next we had to stick them down on a black piece of paper. We got some paint and painted on some dots. The colours were blue white and yellow. Next we put them out to dry. We used rocks to keep them on the deck.

Planting Kōwhai Seeds

Today Me, Xanthe, Ben, Haki, Lincoln, and Louis planted Kōwhai seeds. There was 104 seeds. We had to put the seeds in egg cartons. Mrs Hickford soaked the seeds in water and napkins.  We had to fill the egg cartons with compost and then add the seeds. My favourite part was putting in the compost.  Next someone would put in some water.

Bubble Animation

This is my Bubble animation. I did it with Harmony who is in Ruma Kotuku. We watched a video about a person who flew on a bubble. Next Harmony got to chose where she wanted to go on a bubble. Harmony flew on a bubble at the beach. We made an animation together. Harmony drew a picture on explain everything of her in a bubble . I learnt how you draw on explain everything. Have you had to work with someone younger than you before?

Book Creator

For cybersmart we had to make a comic on Book Creator. My comic was about having a quality conversation with my friend. I asked questions so she could answer back and the conversation went on longer. We got to chose the back round and shape of our comic.  My favourite part was adding the photos.  The hardest part was getting the speech bubbles the right size. Have you ever done Book Creator before?

Egg-speriment

Mrs King our princibale set us a challenge we had to try and make an egg bounce with out cooking it!!!  We used two different vinegars. We tried it with two eggs. We put the eggs into glass jars and poured in the vinegar. We used white vinegar and malt vinegar. I found out that eggs shell is made of calicum which is porus, a bit like our teeth. We waited 3 day before bouncing it. The first time Mrs Hicford was bouncing the egg on the table the egg nearly fell off but she caught it, she bounced it again and it fell off and splattered all over  the floor. That was the one in malt vinegar.  We had one egg now. We went outside. We had a meter ruler and a container. First we dropped it from 10cm ,it bounced. Next we dropped it from 20cm and it splatted into the container. Now we have some more eggs doing the same. hopfuly they bounce better than the others. This time we are going to wait longer than 3 days.

Funk 2 Junk

Lucy, Olivia, Sofia, Xanthe, and I are making a virus for Junk 2 Funk. We are making a virus because covid 19 has been around. It is being built out of boxes, toilet roll, any tubes, tape and egg cartons. The theme is contagious. We glue tubes and rolls onto the box with glue guns. Someone is going to go into the box. My favourite part was using the glue gun because it was my first time using it. We took turns at using the glue gun.  It was fun because it was my first time doing Junk 2 Funk and I was with my friends. Junk 2 Funk is a competition that we have in Hokitika every year. You have to make something out of recycled junk. Have you ever done Junk 2 Funk?

Sort The Comment

This is a goggle drawing of good and bad comments. We had to put  thumbs up or thumbs down sign depending if it was a good or bad comment. We did it in pairs. I was with Rhys. We did this for cybersmart. A good comment is positive, thoughtful, kind, helpful and you can ask a question. We are learning to recognise a quality blog comment and give reasons for our thinking.

Cross Country

This is a photo of me doing cross country. We did it round the cycle track.  The year fours had to do three laps. I was super fun because it went into the fort. I came first out of everyone in my age group. I even bet the boys!!! We had to start on the field, go to the cycle track, up to the fort, out of the fort, back in the fort, down the ditch and back out onto the field. I was hard to get up the muddy parts. I love cross country!!!

Magic Powder

Today we did an experiment. We got into pairs and had a cup with sodium polyacrylate. Me, Sofia and Taylor were in a group. We did not know it was sodium polyacrylate. Then Chris gave us some water with a spoon. We had to put it in the cup. It made the powder expanded!!! We touched it and it felt soft but looked hard. We put 32 tea spoons of water in. Then Mrs Hickford put in to tea spoons of salt. The powder had air bubbles in it! It was turning into liquid. It looked really cool. I thought that it was going to fizz just like Finnian's volcano. I learnt that disposable nappies take 450 years to break down. Have you ever done this experiment? I found it fun and exiting because I didn't know what was going to happen next.

This week for the school challange was to make an activity to do in the school holidays. My activity is in the school holidays make a book and draw pictures of places you have been and what you did. In the slide it will show you how to make a book and what to do. I have learnt how to make a book. I am proud that I made a book. It was fun to make. I hope you like it too. Have you ever made a book?

Bunny Polyline

This is my bunny.  I made it on a google draw. To make it I found a picture of a bunny and traced over it with the polyline tool. Then I added the detail. I took the picture away and chose a colour to make the bunny. Mrs Swinburn is going to put them on a slide. I am proud of my bunny because it looks great!!! It was hard tracing over the picture of the bunny. Do you have a pet bunny?

Scratch

This is my scratch. Mrs Swinburn did one in a DFI course and she was teaching us so we did a scratch. My scratch is about bowling and bating. There is a batter and a bowler. The bowler throws the ball and the batter hits it. To do it I had to use different blocks. These are the blocks I used for the ball and the bowler. The first blocks are for the ball and the second blocks are for the bowler. I didn't need to use any blocks for batter. I  a proud of making my characters move. I like making blocks to make the ball move. It was fun because sometimes it went crazy. Have you ever done scratch?

Bruce McLaren

This week for reading we are learning about Bruce McLaren. He is a racing car driver. Bruce was born in Auckland in 1937. He lived till he was 32. When Bruce was nine years old he got Perthes Disease. He got taken to Wilson Home for Crippled Children. Perthes Disease left Bruce with a life time limp but he still raced cars. Bruce won lots of local races. In 1958 he got into the Grand Prix. Bruce didn't win but he did earn a scholarship that gave young New Zelanders a chance to drive racing cars in Europe. As part of the scholarship, he was invited to join the famous Cooper racing team in England. When Bruce got to his car company he was given a space to work and a car, but his car didn't work because it was in pieces. Bruce had to make his car. In 1959, Bruce entered the United
States Grand Prix at Sebring, Florida. On the final lap Bruce was in the lead but a french driver was catching him but Bruce still won. Bruce had won the Grand Prix. It was his first try as well. He was 22 years old, the youngest driver ever to win the Grand Prix. It took 44 years for anyone to beat his time. On the 2nd of June 1970 Bruce was practising his driving and he lost control and crashed. He was instantly killed at the age 32.
This is a quote that Bruce said “It would be a waste of life to do nothing with one’s ability, for I feel that life is measured in achievement, not in years alone.” This quote means that Bruce had lots of achievements and you don't have to live long if you want to achieve something.
I learnt lots of stuff about Bruce. Like when he was born, when he died, how he was the youngest driver to win the Grand Prix.

Origami Cats

These are some instructions on how to make an origami cat. I made Cats with my friend Maya.  It is the face of a cat. You have a piece of paper. It has to be a square not a rectangle. Then you make it into a triangle. You grab the two corners  and fold them up to make the ears. Then the tip of the triangle you fold it over. Then you turn your cat over and draw your cat face on.  I made lots of these they are really fun to make.  Have you ever made one?

My Waka

This is my waka. We had to colour the waka in with water colours. We also had to use our polyline face. If we got to much water on the paper it would rip so we had to be careful.  I found it fun because it was my first time doing water colour at school. We could choose what colour we wanted. I chose red, green, blue, brown, black and skin colour. I had different shades of the colours. My favourite part was the waves and my shirt. The shirt had to be similar to the colour of our school shirts. I like colouring where there are big spaces because it is harder when the lines are close together. When we used the water it was best to use a small brush. You only need to colour the outline of the thing that you are colouring in because the water makes the colour spread. Have you ever done water colour? If you have what did you colour in.

Limericks

These are my limericks. Limericks are like poems. They have 5 sentences. The first two have to rhyme. The next two have to rhyme. The last one has to rhyme with the first two. The rhyming words have to be at the end of the sentences. I found it tricky at first but it got easier the more I did.  Have you ever done a limerick?
