Blue Penguin Footprints

Today when we went for a walk on the beach we found some footprints.  We took a photo of the footprints. The footprints were leading to the water and we thought they might be penguin prints. When we went home we searched up penguin footprints and they were the same as the photo we took. These are the footprints.

  1. Hi Renny
Wow, what a wonderful discovery. It is great that you are getting out and discovering new things on the beach near your house. What made you think that these might be penguin footprints? Do you know what kind of penguin made the footprints? There are three main types of penguin in New Zealand. Perhaps you can do some research to find out what these are and where you might find them. I would love to see an update on your post about them. Here is a link to some more information: https://www.doc.govt.nz/nature/native-animals/birds/birds-a-z/penguins/. Perhaps you and Finnian could find out ways to help keep the penguins safe from predators. You could then let your neighbours know what they can do to help save the penguins on the beach near your home. I would love to see what you can come up with.

    1. Hi Mrs Hickford. We think they were penguin footprints because there was a sign and it said keep your dogs on a lead because of the penguins that nest at the beach. I think they were blue penguin footprints because of the sign and they were quite small.

    2. I think you may be correct Renny. I know that little blue penguin nest on the beaches around Hokitika. Did you know they are the smallest of the penguins. There is a really good website put up by the West Coast Little Blue Penguin Trust. You will find lots of really interesting information about them on it. I suggest you check it out and share with me what you learn. Here is a link: https://www.westcoastpenguintrust.org.nz/

  2. Hi Renny, I have seen these too but have never seen a little penguin on the beach. They go out to sea at daylight and feed during the day and return at dusk. I think they are cheeky little things. Have you drawn one? Mrs M

  3. Kia ora Renny,
Wow, it is so cool how you were able to find some penguin footprints along the beach! That is such a fantastic discovery, and I can only imagine how excited you must have been to have found them on your walk.
Taking a photo of the footprints and searching them up when you got home was a great idea, and I think it is awesome how you were able to figure out which creature these mystery tracks belonged to.
Did you find out which particular type of penguin made these tracks?
Were there only the tracks of one penguin, or did he/she have a friend?
What time did you go to the beach? Were the tracks old?
It would be awesome if you could reply to this comment and let me know!
The photo you have included is fantastic, and I am exceedingly glad you incorporate it into your post so I am able to see the footprints you found!
    Keep up the great work!

  4. Hi Kieryn. Think they were blue penguins footprints because there was a sign that said keep your dogs on leads because of the penguins. further down the beach we found some more blue penguin footprints. We went to the beach in the morning. I think the tracks weren't old because the tide did not wash them away.

    1. Kia ora Renny,
Thank you for answering all of my previous questions, I appreciate it alot!
I still can’t believe the awesome tracks that you found on your beach walk!
It is interesting to hear how you found a sign which asked for dog-owners to keep their dogs on a lead because of the penguins. I have never seen a sign like that before which specifies why the dogs need to be kept on a lead, so it was cool you remembered this and added it into your reply!
Have you been back to that particular beach since to see if you could find any more tracks?
Have you ever found tracks anywhere else?
I once found kangaroo tracks when I lived in Australia. We had a bush which backed onto our house, and it was a regular occurence to have 2 or 3 kangaroos jumping around our background and squashing our veggie patch!
Keep up all the hard work!

  5. You are so lucky Renny I have never found any prints but have always looked for them when I am at the beach. I wonder if you will be even luckier one day an see a penguin too.
